Principal Engineer
Management Roles
o Develop, maintain and control the technical interface to customers, suppliers and collaborators to ensure effective and swift resolution of technical issues and to deliver contractual commitments.
o Ensure team size and capability mix is optimised for successful delivery of work packages, and to enable the optimum availability of technical resources in assigned areas to operational units or to other activities.
o Prepare and/or oversee the definition of system requirements, the development of specifications and the preparation of complex and business critical engineering designs.
o Manage assigned budgets and direct, lead, coach, develop and motivate employees to ensure the objectives of the business unit are met and to enable them to maximise their potential.
o Manage and report against the team?s work programmes, including analysis of risk, to ensure the team meets its objectives.
Specialist Roles
o Provide specialist input, including the application of specialist skills and knowledge to more than one programme
o Maintain national & international industry and academic links in assigned technology area(s), keeping aware of potential developments and developing options for their insertion where relevant into the business.
o Carry out technical investigations, assess and provide recommendations regarding short and long-term consequences.
o Maintain own peer network and make significant contributions to relevant community of interest within BD&T to enable delivery of integrated capabilities
o Take responsibility for design authority for team work package, including operation of formal review processes
o Develop and maintain the client?s competence and tools in specialist technical area(s), in line with latest developments and best practice, and ensure these are used effectively.
o Check and approve the work of others
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
o Typically Chartered Engineer, plus significant relevant experience
or
o Equivalent and relevant engineering knowledge and experience
o Meets the requirements for registration as a Chartered Engineer and is preferably be a member of a relevant Professional body.
o Experience in engineering leadership/management in a relevant industry
and
o Technical authority in one/more area(s) (recognised by customers and suppliers and by all other areas of the client as an expert).
o Can define, re-engineer and review processes
o Can provide technical and/or managerial leadership
o Extensive understanding of company policies and standards
o Extensive understanding of engineering quality standards and legal and regulatory obligations, particularly those involving safety.
o Extensive knowledge of the Marine business, its operations and company goals and developments
o Possesses extensive business knowledge of customers, competitors and suppliers
o Good commercial and financial understanding
o Negotiating and influencing skills
o Strategic planning capability
o Well-developed planning and organisation skills and project management expertise
o Highly developed communication skills: able to communicate verbally and in writing at Board level
o Excellent problem solving skills
o Well developed understanding and management capability of Design Services key business drivers including overhead costs.
It is expected that individuals working at this level will have Technical Authority and be responsible for their scope of work and the decisions taken. Technical assistance, guidance and support from engineering colleagues will only be rarely required.
